Michigan Basketball (27-8, 15-3) cruised past Texas and advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 79-65 win. The Wolverines ambushed the Longhorns with an early 10-0 run that was fueled by triples from Nik Stauskas and Caris LeVert. For good measure, Michigan added an 8-0 run later in the opening stanza and took a 13 point lead into halftime.
Texas battled hard in the second half and used a 17-5 run to slice Michigan’s lead down to six points. The Wolverines helped the cause by starting the second half shooting just 3-11 from the field. Michigan was able to regroup and used a late 8-0 run late to seal the victory and send Texas packing.
Michigan’s attack was paced by four starters with at least 14 points. They shot 14-28 from three point range. The 14 three pointers established a new school record for an NCAA Tournament game.
1. When Texas made their run, Glenn Robinson III took it upon himself to dash any hopes the Longhorns had of completing the comeback. He started off an impressive second half sequence with an emphatic blocked shot. Then he went strong to the rim for a bucket and capped it off with a key three pointer. He finished the game with 14 points, 5 boards, 2 steals and the one block.
2. Nik Stauskas was the catalyst for Michigan in their first half dominance. He knocked down three triples to stake the Wolverines to a big lead that would ultimately prove too large for Texas to overcome. He scored a team-high 17 points and dished out a game-high 8 assists.
3. Jordan Morgan more than held his own against Texas’s super-sized front court. He finished the game with a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. He also recorded two assists and two steals. He essentially neutralized the size advantage that the Longhorns were hoping to exploit.
What it means
Michigan advanced to their second consecutive Sweet 16 and the Wolverines will have a legitimate chance of making back-to-back to Final Four appearances. The team is playing at a high level right now. Their offensive efficiency is going to be very hard for teams to deal with as they continue to march through the tourney.
A key component for Michigan’s chances is the resurgence of Glenn Robinson III. He has elevated his game in recent weeks and when he plays well, the Wolverines are that much more difficult to handle.
Michigan turned the ball over just four times in the game.
Jordan Morgan also notched a double-double in Michigan’s win over Wofford.
Michigan limited Texas to 37.1% shooting.
Six different Michigan players connected on a three pointer; Nik Stauskas, Caris LeVert, Glenn Robinson III, Derrick Walton, Zak Irvin and Spike Albrecht.
Michigan will await the winner of Tenessee vs Mercer. If Michigan wins that game they will play either Louisville, Wichita State or Kentucky.
