The Human torch was in full force tonight…
The Golden State Warriors were coming off a five day layoff and faced off against the Memphis Grizzles, a team that was desperately trying to fight off the Phoenix Suns for the seventh seed in the deep Western Conference. The Memphis Grizzles boast the best Power Forward/Center combination in the game when you’re talking about Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol and the Warriors needed every big body they could get to defend those guys, as they were without David Lee (strained hamstring).
Friday night’s game started off with a high scoring first quarter but Warriors’ center Andrew Bogut left the game early in the quarter after taking a knee from Marc Gasol, he would later be diagnosed with a pelvic contusion and did not return to the game. So being without their starting Power Forward and Center for the rest of the game, the Warriors had to rely on Marreese Speights (who got his first start as a Warrior in Friday nights game), Jermaine O’neal and Draymond Green for the rest of game.
Both teams shot really well from the field in the hotly contested game but the difference was the three pointers. Memphis only went 2-12 from three in the game though they did most of their damage with Gasol and Randolph, but the Warriors made nine 3 pointers, oh and of course that guy Stephen Curry (the Human Torch) came up with a big game.
Curry lit it up in the second half and in particular the 4th quarter, as he led the warriors on a comeback after being down 93-86 with 4 minutes remaining. The Warriors scored the game’s final 14 points including a go ahead 3 by Curry to put the Warriors up 96-93 with 1:21 remaining in the game and then hit a smooth lay-up high off the glass the put the game to bed and the Warriors went on to win 100-93, Curry finished the game with 33 points including going 5-8 from three point land.
“Memphis is right behind us, these are home games we need to close out to finish the season.” Curry said “We still have work to do, we have to play together and show up on the defensive end like we did tonight. We have the weapons to deliver a heavy punch at any time.”
The back up bigs stepped up as well, Jermaine O’neal and Draymond Green combined for 22 points and 15 rebounds off the bench Marreese Speights had 15 points and 8 rebounds as the starter.
“I had the opportunity to start” Speights said after the game “I’m going to be working hard to stay ready”
With the loss the Grizzles now fall back to the eighth seed in the Western Conference with a 43-29 record and the Phoenix Suns are now in the 7th seed with a 44-29 record. The Warriors are now 45-27 and only one game back of the Portland Trailblazers for the fifth seed. The Warriors face off against the struggling New York Knicks (30-43) Sunday night in Oakland and the Warriors can ill-afford to lose anymore home games against teams that are suppose to be beaten as the playoff seeding in the West is ever changing.
