While the Columbus Blue Jackets (38-30-6) have faced some struggles these past few weeks, most notably their 3-1 loss on March 21st against the New York Rangers (41-30-4). Even though they have recently dropped in the rankings they are still battling it out in hopes of attaining the Wild Card spot.
With all of that being said, this is still one of the best seasons for our relatively new hockey team that joined Columbus for the 2000-01 season. You would think finally having the chance to have a team make it big would incite excitement for the sports fans of Columbus; well, you think wrong.
Sadly, the Columbus Blue Jackets currently rank 29th in the NHL when it comes to game attendance with an average of just around 14,000 attending per game. It is a well known fact that Columbus has some of the most passionate fans around, so why are they not so supportive of their hockey team?
While the Blue Jackets have not been one of the better teams in the NHL for most of their career, they finally are building into a team with a lot of potential. They have an amazing goalie in Sergei Bobrovsky and young players like Ryan Johansen are having a breakout season. Yet, fans are still not being supportive.
Everyone knows that Columbus is a town that supports its college team full heartedly. But let’s be honest, the Ohio State had a very off season when it came to basketball and were sadly out of the running for the championship in just the first round. The Blue Jackets, on the other hand have had a season full of excitement and success, it is time that their passionate city becomes passionate about them.
Columbus is not an Ohio city that was blessed with many professional sports teams and maybe that’s why they support their college so strongly. But, it is time that some of the fans that attend every single Ohio State game no matter the sport begin to attend at least some of the Blue Jackets games.
Hockey is an amazing sport full of passionate fans. The games draw you in and amazes you because let’s face it, very few of us have the passion and endurance to lace up a pair of skates and give it our all on ice for an hour. While it’s hard to watch your team lose over and over again, that hasn’t been the season the Columbus Blue Jackets have had. Please Columbus, and Ohio for that matter, begin to support your hockey team.
