In their recent 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace, Chelsea has managed to cough off some much needed points that might cost them the English Championship. Sitting pretty at the top of the table before the match, the Londoners fell to third place where both Liverpool and Manchester City sit in first and second place respectively. Here is what Mourinho had to say after the Crystal Palace match, “Now we have lost our chance of finishing first. Now we depend too much on other results. Crystal Palace deserved the victory, they fought for their lives. We had good chances and their goalkeeper made some good saves in the first half. But their spirit was stronger, their desire was stronger and their commitment was stronger. That disappoints me, but it’s a defeat that we can only blame ourselves for.” In recent weeks, Jose Mourinho had predicted that his side will just fall out on the top. He always played Chelsea’s title chances down and even went on to say that the Premier League crown would go to Manchester City at the end of the season.
He has often gone on to blame that his club are in dire need of a superstar signing to inject new life in the new look Blues attack. The current front line for Cheslea consists of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o, and on a rare occasion Andre Schurrle whom plays as an attacking midfielder. Torres is a player that will give you a great performance in one match and will go cold in another. He is definitely just a shadow of the player that he once was when he was playing at Liverpool and Atletico Madrid. Ba is nowhere near the quality that Chelsea need in order to compete and go far in other major European competitions. For Eto’o, he is a player way past his prime. This will give Mourinho many problems as he begins the final stretch of the season where these next several matches will matter most.
As every league game passes, Jose Mourinho has less and less confidence in his strikers and has already announced to the public that Chelsea will splash big money so that they can get a top-quality striker. Chelsea have been linked with many superstars such as Diego Costa and the unsettled Edison Cavani. Even Wayne Rooney seemed destined to leave Manchester United over the summer but he has now quashed rumors of him leaving anytime soon with a ridiculous $104 million contract. However, the most likely transfer that could happen are the two listed above as numerous reports were claiming that Chelsea would consider a player swap with either Thibaut Courtois or Fernando Torres where it will see Diego Costa become a Chelsea player. The other option could be Edison Cavani who has become unsettled in the French capital. Due to Ibrahimovic’s fantastic form this campaign, it has seen Cavani go out to the right wing where he normally plays a central striker. He looks ready to leave come the summer transfer window when he only joined PSG in the summer before.
With Chelsea dropping crucial points as they head into the business end of the season, do you think Chelsea will succeed in mounting a 1st place finish or will they have better luck next year with the purchase of new and more confident strikers?
