Duke basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski has already said he sees himself at Duke for at least another five seasons. This means the Duke basketball team is set for at least the next five seasons, and those five seasons could turn in to seven very easily. This will put Duke in a great position going forward with recruits, and at a competitive stand point for at least the next five seasons.
The recruiting process is going very well for Coach K. He has gotten top recruits the last two seasons, and has gotten off to a good start in the 2015-16 season with Luke Kennard. That recruiting class could only get stronger going forward with a couple of recruits sounding like a strong possibility that they could land at Duke. This is showing great potential for Duke in the next few seasons.
Coach K’s final few seasons with the Blue Devils should be great ones and could get him that fifth National Championship he seeks. The future at Duke is bright, but the biggest question for the next ten seasons is who will take over for Coach K after he retires from coaching? This will be the biggest question, but there should be a number of well qualified candidates who would want the position. Coach K could have someone waiting to take over after he retires, or could leave it up to the school. Whoever replaces coach K will have to continue getting the players that he was able to land.
The coach will be important for Duke after Coach K retires, but with him getting the top players, and with the history of Duke Basketball will help the next coach. With the players coming in and the players he has been getting for Duke, the future looks bright being able to compete at the highest of levels. He is recruiting every player, and in recent years has shown that he can get some of the top players out of high school. With him getting the best players out of high school, and his coaching ability, it should be a great five to seven years of Duke Basketball.
The future of Duke Basketball is a little more uncertain after Coach K leaves, because it does depend on the next coach. It could be a former player at Duke; he has brought in a number of former players to be his assistants over the years. Some have left, like Johnny Dawkins, to take the head basketball coaching position at Stanford that has paid off for him. It could be a former player that coach K will have on his coaching staff at the time of his retirement, and could try keep everything just the same after he leaves. They just wouldn’t have one of the great college coaches of all time there anymore.
The other option for a coach would be to bring someone from the outside to coach Duke, and go in a completely different direction. They might be able to go after Brad Stevens if the NBA doesn’t work out, and by the time Coach K retires he could be looking to come back to the college ranks. Either way Duke Basketball should continue to be a strong program in the next few seasons and should continue well after coach K retires.
