Gareth Bale gave Real Madrid their 19th Copa del Rey at Mestalla against Barcelona giving Gerardo “Tata” Martino more pressure after being eliminated from the Champions League.
Unbeaten from their last final with Barcelona in Copa del Rey at the same ground, the game came to life when Angel Di Maria broke the deadlock at the tenth minute before Barcelona’s defender Marc Bartra drew their level.
It was a more competitive game in the second half by both squads, but it was Bale’s goal that handed Real Madrid the title.
The result gave Real Madrid their first trophy of the year as they go in search of the pass to the Champions League final in Lisbon.
Before kick-off, Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti showed he had confidence in his team to win tonight at Mestalla when he said the squad has proven know how to win without Cristiano Ronaldo.
In the 11th minute, Di Maria put Barcelona in the back foot with a composed finish for 0-1, courtesy of Karim Benzema.
Barcelona with a 63% of possession of the ball were unsuccessful to equalized in the first half.
Real Madrid focused their lines on faster and lethal counter attacks from Benzema, Di Maria, and Gareth Bale, but were unsuccessful to score.
On the second half, Barcelona equalized the game in the 68th minute with a glancing header of Marc Bartra during a corner.
With the match hanging in the balance, Bale recovered a ball and made a 90 yard sprint and score the winning goal for the Merengues at the 85th minute.
