This past Monday on RAW, we saw a few signs point in that direction. First, WWE announced that the WWE Universe will get to vote on Cena’s opponent for the night. The choices were either Luke Harper, Luke Harper and Erik Rowan, or Luke Harper, Erik Rowan, AND Bray Wyatt.
Next was a promo from Wyatt himself, which of course was spectacular. Has he cut a bad promo since the Family started on RAW? Wyatt spoke about how the WWE Universe is on his side and not Cena’s. “Whether it’s inside a steel cage or within your own mind … we stand against you,” was a good quote from the Eater of Worlds to sum up the promo. He made it really convincing that the WWE Universe is with him.
Then came a backstage interview with Cena where he, for the first time in a long time, wasn’t in sync with his fans. His face showed worry about the upcoming vote. He made it clear that he knows that a lot of fans can’t stand him and want to see him lose. Bray Wyatt is clearly getting into Cena’s head.
Mid-interview a “Let’s go Cena” “Cena Sucks” chant broke out. The Leader of the Cenation then said:
“I’m not gonna pretend like I don’t know whats going on. Ever since Wrestlemania every single place that we travel I’ve heard the same song, and it gets louder and louder. He’s got the whole world in his hands, I’m beginning to think that he just might.”
Woah. Does that sound like Cena maybe losing hope in his fans? I think it at least brings up the possibility.
Then came the moment of truth, the WWE App vote. Not too surprisingly, the WWE Universe voted that Cena will take on all three members of the Wyatt Family. When the results were announced Cena looked around the Baltimore Arena with disappointment in his eyes.
This was another tease at the heel turn. We have seen it teased so many times before. Fans get their hopes up all the time, because it is the one thing every long time wrestling fan wants to see. Every single top wrestler has turned heel at some point: HBK, Jericho, Undertaker, Rock, Austin, and of course Hogan. There is not one first ballot Hall of Famer for the WWE who has been a face their entire career.
It’s understandable why people think it won’t happen. Cena’s merchandising sales are too high and he does too much with kids. Especially because has granted over 400 (!!) Make-a-Wish wishes, more than any other celebrity on Earth. How can someone like that become a bad guy?
Whether or not people believe it will happen, I think it should. Some fans HATE John Cena. Seriously, they do. I’m a fan because of what he does for kids and the company, but not a huge fan of his character. I don’t think he needs a heel turn to cement himself as one of the top superstars of all time, he already has that down, but I think it should happen. It would be very risky to pull off, but it’s what fans want to see. I mean, this is the reality era.
If Cena does turn heel, then this would have to be considered the biggest push in WWE history for Bray Wyatt. A year ago he wasn’t even on RAW! He and the Family were wrestling on NXT and now a year later I’m writing an article about him turning John Cena heel? That would have to be up there with breaking the Undertaker’s streak (in my opinion) in regards to the biggest thing one can accomplish with this company.
Fans pulling for a heel turn couldn’t have been happier with the end of RAW. Bray Wyatt sitting in the center of the ring with John Cena’s head in his lap. While Bray has one hand on the mic and one hand on Cena’s head, he and the entire crowd are singing “He’s got the whole world in his hands.”
