Horse Racing: 2014 Kentucky Derby field begins to take shape

With less than 10 days to go before the biggest race in the world takes place, the 2014 Kentucky Derby, the field is beginning to take shape with budding superstar California Chrome leading the way in Horse Racing’s most classic race.

With Cairo Prince (out of the Derby with an injury) and Midnight Hawk (removed from the list following his second-place finish in the Illinois Derby as the 2-5 favorite this past Saturday) spots opened in the field for Vinceremos and Harry’s Holiday.

The top 20 horses in the points standings (see chart) are confirmed to run with the exception of Ring Weekend and Harry’s Holiday. Any other defections would open spots for Commanding Curve, Pablo Del Monte and Bayern, in that order.

A maximum of 20 horses can run, with up to four also-eligibles.

Bayern is 23rd on the list. He earned 20 points for his third-place finish in the Arkansas Derby but still ranks behind Vinceremos, Harry’s Holiday, Commanding Curve, and Pablo Del Monte (all have 20 points) due to the tie-breaker, earnings in non-restricted stakes races, but will go in Saturday’s Derby Trial.

Bayern is ahead of Social Inclusion, who was third in the Wood Memorial, which was worth 20 points, but earned $10,000 less for that race than Bayern did for his third in the Arkansas Derby.

As of this past Monday, all those with 20 points were still under consideration for the Derby.

Did you get all that?…good…because I’m not sure I did….stay tuned.
