Mocks: Dennard, Ebron, wideouts projected to New York Jets

On one of their several draft specials Thursday, ESPN had their NFL draft analysts, Todd McShay and Mel Kiper, Jr., swap odd and even picks, respectively, for a one-round mock. With the Jets’ 18th pick, Kiper chose Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks – which was immediately followed by a montage of 1980s Jets fans booing the pick.

Everyone’s doing them. I did some, and I’ll be doing some more. With the first round four days away, let’s look at the most recent mock drafts published by other reputable sources, and which prospects they project the Jets to take. – Bucky Brooks: Marqise Lee, WR, USC (May 1) – Charles Davis: Odell Beckham, WR, LSU (April 21) – Don Banks: Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State (April 22) (Cooks, Beckham, Lee still on board)

CBSSports – Pete Prisco: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State (April 30)

The phenomenon of mocking first-round cornerbacks to the Jets at #18 came on recently, within the last month or so. Before that, every mock had the Jets taking Ebron, Lee or another wide receiver. I’ll restate my opinion that I do not think spending another first-round pick on a cornerback is the Jets’ answer, and move on to show you some other draft mockers that also want the Jets to pick Dennard.

The following are multi-round mock drafts:

CBSSports – Rob Rang: Two rounds, updated April 28

1, #18: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State

2, #49: Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame

Real Football Services: Three rounds, updated April 24

1, #18: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State

2, #49: Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State

3, #80: Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame

Walter Football: Six rounds, updated May 2

1, #18: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina

2, #49: Lamarcus Joyner, DB, Florida State

3, #80: Paul Richardson, WR, Colorado

4, #104: Dion Bailey, S, USC

4, #115: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford

4, #137: E.J. Gaines, CB, Missouri

5, #154: Tajh Boyd, QB, Clemson

6, #195: Dez Southward, S, Wisconsin

6, #209: Cassius Marsh, DE/OLB, UCLA

6, #210: Jeoffrey Pagan, DE/DT, Alabama

6, #213: John Brown, WR, Pittsburgh State

If the longest mock is the best one, I’ve saved the best for last. Despite the ridiculous things he said about the Jets in this 2015 mock draft, Mr. Football is an excellent source of draft news, rumors and mocks, and he goes much deeper than guys like Kiper and McShay. Here, we see the Jets filling several needs and having the luxury of drafting Tajh Boyd in the fifth round.

News and Notes: I can say for sure Walter Football is wrong about Michael Vick being the downfall of the New York Jets. Vick told that Geno Smith is the starting quarterback. “Ultimately our goal is to try to help Geno become the best quarterback that he can be. Myself and (third-stringer Matt Simms) are all trying to put him in a position where he can get better from Year One to Year Two.” Vick also changed his jersey number – again – from #8 to #1, hopefully in time before Nike started printing Vick #8 jerseys.
