“With the 10th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select Eric Ebron, tight end, North Carolina.”

Initial reaction:  Disgust.

Detroit was in a phenomenal position at pick 10 but could not deliver.  With highly touted Taylor Lewan, Aaron Donald, Odell Beckham Jr. and Johnny Manziel still left on the board, it seemed like the Lions were primed to trade down, as the aforementioned players do not fill key needs.

Instead, the Lions took a tight end.

Cornerback Darqueze Dennard or safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix would have filled a need.  Both were still on the board.

Instead, the Lions took a tight end.

Detroit now has Ebron, Brandon Pettigrew, Joseph Fauria, and Michael Williams sharing the load.  Crowded to say the least, but each guy has a unique skill set and all can be kept for the 2014-2015 roster.

[Analysis: Both sides of the Eric Ebron argument]

After resigning Brandon Pettigrew, Ebron will likely play a lot of slot for the Lions until he improves on his blocking.  One has to look no further than new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi for this selection.  Lombardi had receiving tight end Jimmy Graham with the New Orleans Saints.  He will likely use Ebron in the same types of packages.

With excellent size and speed, drafting Ebron does have immense upside so it’s not all bad.  He will certainly help free up coverage alongside Calvin Johnson and up the middle.  In a couple years, if he greatly improves his blocking technique, we could be looking at the best tight end in football.

Also, it’s not like Pettigrew is a stud.  If Ebron can come into training camp with his working boots on, he could supplant Pettigrew as the starter by the end of the year.  Work ethic issues had some teams worried about Ebron.  Obviously, the Lions were not one of those teams.

Let’s hope for the best and see what Martin Mayhew has up his sleeve on Day 2.

I agree with the disgust reaction. My first words, “Are you kidding me?”. Is Millan still a consultant to this team? Now one of the rivals in the division has Ha Ha Clinton Dix to help punish the Lion receivers. Need to continue to improve the secondary and defense in general. More disappointment from a management team that underachieves.

I thought Matt Millon was the only one that had a fetish for tight ends?

Can Ebron tackle? If not, I’m just not that interested.
