VCU Basketball: Jairus Lyles transfers out of the Ram’s program

Coach Shaka Smart announces that Jairus Lyles will be transferring out of the Ram’s program. The 6-2 guard from DeMatha has the speed and skill set that fit with VCU’s style, but he didn’t quite outplay some of his teammates.

Lyles’s transfer location hasn’t been confirmed yet, but whatever team gets him will benefit from his talents. Lyles is a skilled guard as he can play both point and shooting. Being that he thrives more as a shooting guard, Lyles explodes when he gets the ball and shoots. Lyles did play in 22 of VCU’s 25 games last season as a freshman. With an average of 2.6 minutes/game, Lyles is probably looking for more playing time. Still young, Lyles is making a smart move by finishing out his last three years at a school where he can earn more playing time.

Lyles is a great fit for VCU but unfortunately for him, guards like Graham, Weber, Lewis and Johnson outplayed him and earned the minutes. Additionally, with 2014 guard recruit Jonathan Williams, Lyles would have had yet another guard to compete for time with. Williams is a high scoring guard who will be coming in fired up and excited to play for Coach Smart.

Fans can’t blame Coach Smart for the guards he chose to play on the court most. Lyles averaged 2-20 FG and 1-8 3PT shots last season. It appears that Lyles had a bit more trouble shooting under Coach Smart’s plays than anyone would have thought.

VCU will miss Lyles, but the program is pretty stacked with guards for the time being. Lyles will probably thrive on another team where he can utilize his talents.
