Round 1 Pick 2- T Greg Robinson
This is a great pick for the St. Louis Rams. Robinson was the best run blocker and one of the best overall players in the draft, so picking him up here was an excellent pick. His dominant run blocking will give the Rams the edge with their run-first mentality. He has elite athleticism and will develop into a solid pass blocker. This piece solidifies what should be a good offensive line in 2014.
Round 1 Pick 13- DT Aaron Donald
This pick confuses me a bit but I definitely respect it. The Rams already had one of the best front four’s in all of football so this pick did not fill any need but it apparently was hard to pass on this sack machine. He showed great productivity in college at Pitt and at 300 pounds, can run the 40 in 4.7 seconds. Although I would have liked them to use this pick on a secondary player, this pick gives them one of, if not the best defensive lines in the NFL.
Round 2 Pick 41- DB Lamarcus Joyner
The Rams filled a glaring need with this speedster. Although undersized, Joyner has elite speed and playmaking ability. And if the success of both Bob Sanders and Tryann Mathieu is indeed setting any trend, Joyner definitely fits in perfectly. He can play in the nickel right away and will make a number of plays for the Rams.
Round 3 Pick 75- RB Tre Mason
The Rams have used multiple picks in recent years on running backs but it is well known that no team can have too many solid backs in the NFL. Tre Mason was healthy and productive at Auburn and has experience running on the left side behind big Greg Robinson. He is a virtual clone of future star Zac Stacy with a short but powerful stature and will look to earn the back up spot in 2014.
Round 4 Pick 110- S Maurice Alexander
The Rams addressed another need here at the safety spot. Alexander is a physical player who can inflict huge hits, something that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams loves about him. He struggles a bit in coverage but that can be taught. I would have liked to see them get more a coverage guy at the safety spot, not another hard hitter. But this pick gives them depth at a position that were in need of.
Round 6 Pick 188- CB E.J. Gaines
Talk about a steal in the sixth round. Gaines was one of the best corners in the SEC last season. In 2012, he recorded 74 tackles, 11 pass break ups, and one interception. He has experience on special teams returning punts which could prove valuable in the Rams’ scheme. He is a bit undersized at 5-foot-10 but he makes up for it with athleticism and speed. He also ran track and played basketball in high school. This pick makes the secondary a team strength which was a weakness coming into the draft.
Round 6 Pick 214- QB Garret Gilbert
Gilbert was an underachiever most of his college career, but showed signs of life in his last year at SMU throwing for 21 touchdowns and 3,500 yards. The Rams signed veteran Shaun Hill to be the back up, but this pick gives them a possible long term option. He has ideal NFL size and has a chance to become a decent passer.
Round 7 Pick 226 T Mitchel Van Dyk
Van Dyk is an under the radar pickup who has a chance to compete for a roster spot. He has good size and football smarts and knows where to be at the right time.
Round 7 Pick 241- S Christian Bryant
The rams add even more depth to their secondary with this pick. This now gives them the added benefit of multiple position battles at what once was a depleted secondary with not much hope for the future. His aggressiveness gets him in trouble at times but he has a knack for making big plays.
Round 7 Pick 249- DE Michael Sam
Sam was the co-defensive player of the year in the toughest defensive league in college football. It is not often a team can say they drafted a player of this caliber in such a late round. The Rams made history by drafting the first openly gay player in football. He finished the year with 12 sacks and can play OLB or DE in a 4-3 system.
Round 7 Pick 250 C Demtrius Rhaney
Rhaney will have to prove he is a better center than Barret Jones if he wants to make the roster.
