Mexico Soccer: Giovani Dos Santos sends Villarreal into Europa League

Giovani Dos Santos sent Basque side Real Sociedad on vacation with their heads down, as after a defeat in San Sebastian they were pushed to seventh place in the La Liga table, and forced into the third round of the Europa League.

Villarreal with a 2-1 victory in San Sebastian has qualified directly into the Europa League playoff. Goals from Dos Santos, and Nigerian striker Ikechukwu Uche were enough to sink Real Sociedad.

Villarreal ended its superb season with a convincing performance against Sociedad Sunday.

The scoreline didnt move until the 26th minute of the match when Dos Santos made his presence felt, as he made a tremendous run down the right flank beating several defenders for pace, just before cutting inside and finishing with a left footed strike past a diving Claudio Bravo.

The yellow submarine didnt get on the scoreboard again until the second half. It was another stride from Dos Santos that opened space for Uche to recieve his pass, and slot away with his right foot. Dos Santos, who had been on, and off again from injury this season proved to be the man of the match. But, for consolation purposes, compatriot Carlos Vela found the net in stoppage time to damper Villarreal’s celebrations. Both Mexicans found the net, but only one team was able to qualify directly into the playoff.

Villarreal had a successful uprising this season, finishing 6th in the overall table. The yellow submarines return to the primera division was a huge success. After a complete season in the segunda division, Villarreal proved that it deserves to be playing primera division football. And, it should be said that part of Villarreal’s success this season has been partly due to a stellar season from Dos Santos.

The yellow submarine can now look forward to Europa League football next season, after a short abscence from the primera division.
