A couple of days ago I posted about the Cleveland Browns releasing a former North Carolina football player in Greg Little, who has now found a new home with the Raiders. Unfortunately there is news of another Gridiron Heel being released by his team, as Dwight Jones was let go by the New York Jets a day ago. The 6’3″/230 lbs wide out came out of college in 2012 where he went un-drafted before being picked up the the Houston Texans for the season.
While at Chapel Hill Jones’ career went this way… is freshman season he only played in three games, where he did not make a catch. The following season he played in seven games, making five catches for 21 yds. In his third season in Chapel Hill the young man started in all but one games and had 62 receptions for 946 yds with four TDs. That season Jones was named an honorable mention All-ACC. In his final year in college Jones played every game, grabbing 85 receptions for 1196 yds and 12 TDs.
Jones was signed by the Houston Texans as an free agent. However a few months later the receiver told the lone star state franchise of his decision to not pursue a football career. The Texans first placed Jones on the reserve/did not report list and then released him on June 12, 2013. Jones was signed to the New York Jets’ practice squad on December 18, 2013, however with the franchise picking up several new players at his position the franchise choose to part way with the wide out today.
As I do with all present and former UNC players let me wish all the best to Dwight Jones in whatever comes next for him.
