After having one of the worst seasons in franchise history, the Philadelphia 76ers could not have been more excited for the 2014 NBA draft lottery. The organization essentially gave up on their entire season just to have a shot at landing the number one pick in a draft full of young talent.
Coming off of a season where they finished 19-63, this was good for the second worst record in the NBA. The only team that was worse than the Sixers were the Milwaukee Bucks, who ended the year with a record of 15-67.
For the Sixers, they had the second best odds to receive the first overall pick with a 19.9% chance. The Bucks on the other hand had the highest probability with a 25% chance.
The Sixers organization took a huge gamble by wasting an entire season just to get an opportunity to have the top pick on draft day. Last night, the suspense finally came to an end as the draft order was selected.
In the second round, the Sixers have the 32nd, 39th, 47th, 52nd, and 54th pick. Heading in to the evening, they also had the opportunity to obtain two top ten picks.
New Orleans’ selection was the 10th overall pick, which is now the Sixers pick as a result of the Jrue Holiday trade last summer. As the draft drew to a close, the Sixers, Bucks, and Cleveland Cavaliers remained as the candidates for the top selection.
The order was announced, with the Sixers receiving the third pick, Bucks with the second, and Cavaliers with the first. This is the second year in a row that the Cavaliers have won the top spot and the third time in the past four years.
After all the Sixers did to hopefully ensure themselves the top spot, they fell short again. The franchise took a huge risk this past season, but it remains to be seen if it will pay off in the end.
Despite the fact that the Sixers missed out on the first overall pick, Sixers fans should not be discouraged. This draft is full of many young prospects, and with seven total picks, they should be able to get their hands on a few of them.
Unlike the past few years, it is basically set in stone as to who the first three off the board will be. It most likely will be Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, and Jabari Parker to be the first ones taken, but not necessarily in that order.
Having the third pick in this draft is almost like having the number one pick, as each of these players is worthy of being selected first overall. The only downside is that the Sixers will have to settle for the last of the three.
General Manager Sam Hinkie and the rest of the organization should be excited about where they ended up. While they didn’t land the number one pick, having both the third and tenth picks has them well positioned to rebuild through this draft.
However, this should be a lesson for the Sixers as well as any other organization that is rebuilding. Just because a tanks an entire season, does not necessarily guarantee a top three pick.
The Sixers lucked out in a sense that there is essentially three number one picks in this draft. In most drafts, there usually is only one standout player and will be selected by the team with the top pick.
The NBA draft is scheduled for Thursday, June 26th in New York City. It will be interesting to see which player the Sixers choose with the third overall selection.
