Baltimore Orioles trade Troy Patton to Padres

The Baltimore Orioles have traded reliever Troy Patton to the San Diego Padres in exchange for C Nick Hundley and cash considerations.

Nick Hundley will provide a steady presence behind the plate for Baltimore in Matt Wieters’ absence.

The left-handed Patton has been in the Orioles organization since 2007, acquired in the trade that send Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros. He was 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA (1.95 WHIP) with Baltimore this season, and holds a career 3.28 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. Patton missed the first 25 games of the season due to a suspension stemming from the use of amphetamines.

Hundley, 30, will provide the Orioles with the veteran leadership they need behind the plate while Matt Wieters is on the disabled list. He is hitting .271 with one home run and three RBI in 2014, and is a career .238 hitter with 47 HR and 195 RBI in 510 games spanning seven seasons. He has an average WAR of .99 for his career.

With the addition of Hundley, Caleb Joseph will likely be sent down to AAA Norfolk tomorrow.

The Orioles have already recalled INF Steve Lombardozzi to take Patton’s spot. Lombardozzi hit .292 in 17 games earlier this year for Baltimore, and has hit .294 at Norfolk since he was sent down. With 2B Jonathan Schoop struggling at the plate, Lombardozzi could see a fair amount of playing time at the big-league level.

Reportedly, Baltimore will also recall RHP Preston Guilmet on Sunday, once 1B Chris Davis goes on paternity leave for the birth of his child.
