Derek Fisher is New York Knicks’ head coach

Derek Fisher

According to multiple sources, Derek Fisher will become the next head coach for the New York Knicks. Fisher will make a similar transition to that of Jason Kidd, who retired from the NBA as player to go straight to the sidelines the following season as a head coach.

Kidd reached the second round of the playoffs with the Brooklyn Nets but experienced an up and down season nonetheless.

After losing out on Steve Kerr, Phil Jackson shifted his focus towards Fisher who is one of his longtime players and therefore familiar with the triangle offense. Phil Jackson’s interest in Fisher was well known which lead to Phil being fined by the NBA for publicizing his intent to consider Fisher for the job during Fisher’s tenure as player for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Fisher spent nine seasons as a point guard under Phil Jackson.

The growing expectation is that most Knicks’ fans will question this hiring by Phil. A vast majority of Knicks fans were hoping that Jackson would hire fan favorite and former Golden State coach, Mark Jackson. Fisher has no prior coaching experience. However, Jackson has acknowledged that he has previously spoken with Derek the past few summers about the “next step in his career.”

It is being reported by multiple sources that Fisher will receive a contract that is comparable to what Steve Kerr received from the Golden State Warriors, which is five years for $25 million. It is also being reported that in all likelihood Kurt Rambis will join Fisher’s staff as an assistant coach.

The New York Knicks’ have scheduled a press conference on Tuesday for a “major announcement” at the team’s training center in Greenburgh, N.Y. Fisher is the former president of the NBA Players’ Union.

At this point, it is unclear whether or not Carmelo Anthony will embrace the hiring of Fisher or if this hiring will have an effect on his pending free agency. With Carmelo Anthony’s future with the Knicks still up in the air, one thing is clear, Fisher will be leading the way for the Knicks this upcoming 2014-2015 season.

Will Derek Fisher’s lack of coaching experience push Carmelo out the door or will Carmelo trust in the Zen Master and stay with the Knicks to make a run for a championship in the near future.
