Tom Izzo has lured yet another high scoring guard to East Lansing. Bryn Forbes (6-foot-3, 175 pounds) has decided to transfer from Cleveland State and join the Spartans.
Forbes is from Lansing and decided to transfer back home to be closer to his family, including his sister who is reportedly dealing with health issues. Although he is a non-graduate transfer, he may not have to sit out a season if he gets a hardship waiver from the NCAA for his situation.
Forbes was teammates with current Spartan Denzel Valentine at Lansing Sexton High School where they won a state championship together. He was also the Horizon League Freshman of the Year in 2013 averaging a team-high 15.6 points per game and hitting over 42 percent of his 3-pointers.
Should Forbes be eligible to play this season, he’ll be competing with Alvin Ellis III and others for the starting shooting guard spot. He doesn’t have elite size, but his ability to shoot will give him the chance to contribute right away. The Spartans will need scoring next season and that’s exactly what he can provide.
Conversely, he could definitely benefit sitting out a season to familiarize himself with the schemes and more importantly, build some muscle. It would be extremely tough for a player his size to guard the shooting guards in the B1G on a nightly basis. Should he sit out a year, he would be able to get stronger while learning what it’s like to play in the B1G.
Whenever Forbes is eligible to play, he will provide depth at guard and give Tom Izzo another legitimate scoring option.
