After Sunday’s 6-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox, the Kansas City Royals currently hold a 36-32 record and are only one and half games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. With a four game series starting Monday with the Tigers, the Royals have a chance to take hold of their division before next weekend. Although the team’s offensive numbers have not been great to start the season, Lorenzo Cain has been a consistent player and so far the biggest surprise on the team.
Lorenzo Cain spent time this year on the disabled list, but in the 45 games he has played so far, he is currently batting .301. Cain has been arguably the Royals best hitter this season with runners in scoring position and has good speed on the bases that limits the opposing defenses ability to double him up on a sharply hit ground ball. In his first couple of season Cain has played in Kansas City, he has become more of an overall player. He has improved his plate discipline and always is a threat while up to bat
Lorenzo Cain has been a very solid defensive player this season for the Royals. Cain has great speed, which he improved in the offseason, and is able to track down long fly balls to help his pitcher and help prevent runs.
What to look for
Lorenzo Cain is far from a finished product. He has been compared to Tori Hunter, but Cain has a long way to go in order to be considered in such a high class. At times, Cain has shown his ability to use his power and shows signs of what could be the norm for him. If he is going to be the center fielder in the future for the Royals, he is going to need to continue to play solid defense, continue to be an aggressive base runner, and improve his hitting power.
Overall, Lorenzo Cain has really helped the Royals out this season on defense and has continued to drive runs in to help this team on their current seven game winning streak and hopefully it is a sign of good things to come from him.
