What’s that? The Temple Owls landing a top 25 recruit?
Jalen Brunson, a 5-star point guard from Lincolnshire, IL has Temple on his list of potential landing spots. ESPN has him ranked as the top point guard and the 22nd overall player in his class.
Why would a 5-star recruit from Illinois decide to go play to Temple? It helps that his dad, Rick Brunson, played at Temple from 1991-1995. It is also rumored that Temple has signed Rick as an assistant coach this past week; however I haven’t seen anything official. This rumored hiring would be crucial in potentially getting Jalen to play on North Broad following his senior season.
So what about Jalen as a player? What would he bring to the court in Temple lands him?
He brings everything one would want in a 6-1, 180 pound point guard. It starts with great court vision, but his biggest asset from what I’ve seen is his quickness with the ball. He has a filthy crossover that creates a ton of space for himself. He can pull up from almost anywhere, making the crossover even more deadly.
The point guard seems to shoot really well from outside, and can also quick step to the lane. He is extremely strong with his left hand, especially near the basket. He knows how to make defenders miss. Did I mention he has a wicked crossover? Because he does. Don’t believe me? Watch this:
Remember that these highlights and from Jalen’s junior year of high school. He still has another year to develop more skills and enhance the skills he already possess. His Twitter handle is @jbcrossover5, so yeah, he knows how good his crossover is too.
If Temple fans aren’t already freaking out over the possibility of getting this potential All-American star, it may help that he was just named to the USA Men’s U18 National Team.
Obviously there is no guarantee that Temple will land Brunson, but 247sports.com has Temple as his most likely destination at the moment. His other interests include: Michigan St., Michigan, Purdue, Illinois, Kansas, UConn, and Villanova (THAT would be a nightmare for Temple fans).
Getting Rick Brunson as an assistant coach for the Owls would be a big step in the development of the team, too. He has been an assistant coach on three different NBA teams including the 2010-11 Chicago Bulls who went on to the Eastern Conference Finals. Rick would mean much more to the team than just a way to get Jalen to commit.
I recently wrote an article on criticizing Fran Dunphy’s lack of recruiting (see: Related Article) and landing Jalen would be a major step in the right direction for Dunphy’s recruiting. Not only will he be a huge star on the court, but his addition would hopefully attract other top recruits to come play under a coach that knows a thing or two about winning basketball games.
