The Cleveland Browns begin training camp on July 26th, and all eyes will be on Johnny Manziel. He isn’t the only player that everyone needs to look out for however. Yes, Manziel has the most Twitter followers. Yes, Manziel is best friends with Drake. Yes, Manziel is the most marketable athlete on Cleveland’s roster, but everyone needs to keep an eye out on Terrance West as well.
West has the potential to give the Browns a spark in the running game that they have lacked since Peyton Hillis had his breakout season in 2010. The third round pick out of Towson will likely back up Ben Tate, but he should be seeing a lot of playing time as a rookie.
Tate is not the most durable of backs and injuries have plagued his career. This makes West’s development during training camp even more important. West may very well be the feature back by the end of the season if things don’t go well for Tate.
West’s college statistics are absolutely ridiculous. He rushed for 2,519 yards and 41 touchdowns last year at Towson. He found pay dirt 84 times in three college seasons. The Baltimore Ravens were high on the local kid, but the Browns swooped in to get him late in the third round.
The Cleveland coaching staff is singing his praises already. Head coach Mike Pettine said, “He’s already flashed some of the things that made him special. For a big man to move the way that he moves, just some of the cuts that he’s made. He’s got dancer-type feet, but it’s in a 230-pound man.” (Via CBS Sports)
Pettine said that the AFC North is a division where you need a running back committee, and it is clear that West will be a big part of the coach’s plans.
West is a versatile back and has the ability to catch out of the backfield and is a reliable blocker. Isaiah Crowell may push him for the second string spot, but West will look to erase all doubts that he is a real play-maker during camp. Keep a look out for Terrance West and don’t be surprised if you hear his name quite a few times in 2014.
