Mexico Soccer: Cruz Azul, stuck in a rut

La Maquina is stuck in a rut, unable to find the same form it struck the league with last season. Cruz Azul is yet to obtain its first victory of the apertura 2014, losing in its debut 1-0 against last seasons runner up Pachuca, and then drawing with Santos Laguna 1-1 this week leaves Cruz Azul desperate for its first victory of the season.

Cruz Azul forward Mauro Formica opened the scoreline in La Comarca, dribbling in between two Santos defenders before toe poking the ball into the back of Oswaldo Sanchez’s net. But Cruz Azul was not able to retain the lead, as in the second half Santos forward Darwin Quintero was able to find space to make a cross down the right flank to find Andres Renteria at the back post who nodded in the bouncing ball past a diving Jose de Jesus Corona.

Cruz Azul will now hope to resuscitate against Veracruz in week 3 of the Liga MX. La Maquina has the caliber to be champion, but playing the way it did these past two weeks sorely proves that Cruz Azul is still rusty and will truly have a difficult time replicating the fine form of last season.

The label of super lider hasnt been very kind to teams in the league, so to relinquish that label early on might be best for la maquina. A strong season will be pivotal for Cruz Azul as it has a tremendous tournament coming up in the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.

A good showing from La maquina will be a great indicator of where the Liga MX stands against global competition. Cruz Azul, should it regain last seasons form will have a strong showing in the coming international tournament, but the squad is truly dependent on the form of Marco Fabian, who proved to be a key component to last seasons success.
