Pittsburgh Steelers notebook: Suisham inked until 2018

Kicker Shaun Suisham has been singed to a contract extension. Suisham will be with the Pittsburgh Steelers until 2018. Financial terms have not been reported.

Suisham has been very consist over the past few seasons. He’s made 30-of-32 field goals in 2013 with a 93.8 conversion mark. As a Steeler, he’s 95-of-109 overall with field goals.

Intensity during camp

During the Steelers night practice on Friday, a brawl between running back Le’Veon Bell and linebacker Vince Williams broke during a backs-on-backers drill.

It didn’t end there, as more players butted heads during yesterday’s session.

While brawls aren’t exactly what you want to see between teammates, it still shows the intensity of practice. You want that. No one was injured but having blood boil over during practice shows there’s motivation and determination.

Justin Brown’s broken nose

Apparently safety Shamarko Thomas laid down a hit on wide receiver Justin Brown and broke his nose. The injury won’t keep Brown off the field. Despite having survey to mend the broken nose, he won’t miss time.

This is a credit to Brown who is a fighting for a roster spot. Missing time would lower his chances of making the squad. This should earn him some points with the coaches and teammates.

Brown has a legitimate chance of claiming a spot on this team. He excelled during OTAs and has been consistent during training camp.

Roethlisberger to Miller

The deep passes haven’t been flying for Ben Roethlisberger and the offense. But, one pass that’s still right on target is Roethlisberger to tight end Heath Miller. Multiple times during camp, Big Ben’s found his tight ends in the middle.

When Todd Haley was brought in, he implements a short passing game. It’s not that the Steelers won’t take their shots, but the short passes are becoming effective.

Williams stating his case

With a hefty batch of linebackers on the roster it’s going to take a lot for players like Williams to stay relevant.

Williams has been making a solid case this first week of camp. He’s showing a lot of promise as he’s making plays and hitting like a linebacker should.

There’s still ways to go, but if he can carry this over into preseason games he’ll be a serious contender for playing time.
