Houston Texans: Biggest winner in training camp

It has been a week now since training camp has started for the Houston Texans, and of course the team will have its ups and downs as a team in camp.

Even so you can’t overlook the way some of these players have been in training camp so far. With a new coach for the Texans, it’s a learning curve for both the offense and the defense, but as of now, the defense has looked very good early in training camp, especially Jadeveon Clowney.

Jadeveon Clowney

Being the top overall pick in this past NFL Draft, it’s no surprise that Clowney’s the one that has been impressing everyone from the coaches to even the players.

There has been other players like linebacker Brooks Reed who has been quite impressive as well playing a little bit of both inside and outside positions, but mostly on the outside. He has shown good production so far in practice and has good praise from his coaches especially linebacking coach Mike Vrabel.

You can easily say that the defense in general has been the most impressive overall in camp. The defense has been making it hard on the offense and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick from time to time will make a good play on the defense but it seems it has been more and more big plays coming from the defense instead.

Getting back to Clowney, he has been nothing but amazing in camp so far according to ESPN Analyst Tania Ganguli. “Clowney has looked fantastic in training camp. He has looked explosive, fast and very strong.”

In the little amount of time he’s been practicing he has shown flashes of what he’s been doing when he was a player for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Some of the plays include a tackle in the backfield on the running back that looked similar to the one he had against the Michigan Wolverines, a blocked punt against Shane Lechler, and 1 on 1 drills on Pro Bowl lineman Duane Brown (according to Tania Ganguli).

He has even had comparisons to DeMarcus Ware from former Cowboys linebacker Dat Nguyen who said he could even be better when Ware was coming into the league (according to Houstontexans.com).

Overall, Clowney has been nothing short of spectacular on the field so far. Even after having surgery from a sports hernia. He recently had another minor setback but nothing too serious and should be back on the field very soon.
