A new beginning for Manchester United

As the 2014/2015 English Premier League season approaches, Manchester United FC is looking to come back from last season’s disaster and be the Manchester United everyone knows.

Last season, Man United ended their season with 19 wins, 7 draws and 12 losses. The team was eliminated early from the FA Cup and UEFA tournament. Man United placed 7th in the EPL table, which meant no spot in the UEFA or Europa tournament; a shock for many after being champions in the 2012/2013 season.

Manchester United starts the season against Swansea City, but there are other contenders such as last season’s champions and city rivals, Manchester City. Liverpool placed second in the EPL table but does not have striker Luis Suarez. Then there is third place finisher Chelsea, who has added Diego Costa and former player Drogba.

Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie did not have an excellent season with only 39 goals combined and subs Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Danny Welbeck scored only 13 goals combined. There wasn’t much scoring and there were plenty of goals given away by Manchester United.

At the end of the 2013/2014 season, Man United fired manager David Moyes and some veteran players left the club. Ryan Giggs became players coach for Man United. Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic all left to different clubs in Europe. Man United would have to look for a new manager and young players who would be an asset to the team.

Louis Van Gaal was hired as the next manager of Man United for this upcoming season. Van Gaal was the coach of the Netherlands national soccer team and had tremendous success in the 2014 World Cup: the team ended in third place. Van Gaal signed two young and talented players in Luke Shaw, a defender from Southampton FC, and Ander Herrera, a midfielder from Athletic Club. These two will be looked at to replace the players who left and to join the likes of Rooney, Persie, Juan Mata and Chicharito.

There is a possible signing of midfielder Arturo Vidal from Juventus FC, a Chilean player who had success at the World Cup.

With a new manager, some players leaving and a couple of new players, Manchester United will still have to put together a formation that was better than last season. Manchester United competed in the International Champions Cup (ICC), an American tour, where the best European teams were selected to play. Man United’s first game was against AS Roma, which Man U won 2-1; then they went on to beat Inter Milan and Real Madrid, which led them to the final against Liverpool. In the final, Man United was behind early in the game but eventually beat club rivals Liverpool, 3-1. Man United played the formation of 3-5-2, a formation they are not used to.

Man United had much success in ICC and signed soccer players with potential to be great and add more talent to the team. Where will Man United fall this season and is Van Gaal the right one? Do they need more players or is this team the right team? The 2013/2014 season starts Saturday, August 16th.
