This is the preseason game where you as a fan go and buy tickets. The third preseason game is known as the “dress rehearsal” game where the starters play either the entire half or even into the third quarter. For the Indianapolis Colts, some starters may play more than others due to competition battles, being rookies, or just starting to get in week one form since it is unlikely any of these guys will play in the final preseason game. Here are some things to watch for in the best game of the preseason.
With the projected top four receivers for the Colts this season being Reggie Wayne, Hakeem Nicks, T.Y. Hilton, and Donte Moncrief, that leaves receivers Griff Whalen and Da’Rick Rogers to battle it out for the final spot on the roster as the team will most likely keep five receivers on the roster to start the season. Even though Whalen has better stats so far, I do expect Rogers to win the job being that he is more athletic and has much more size.
Safety Delano Howell has been sidelined with stiffness in his neck after playing in the first preseason game and hasn’t returned since. This has opened the door for 11-year veteran safety Mike Adams to work with the first team defense as Howell’s status is currently unknown. Since losing safety Antoine Bethea to San Francisco 49ers, the Colts have been working to find an answer at safety and right now it’s Adams.
After not playing in the first two preseason games, wide receiver Reggie Wayne is still waiting to make his debut and this game against the New Orleans Saints at home would be the perfect game to do so. Wayne has not played in any game action since tearing his ACL last season and has been participating in practice. Head coach Chuck Pagano says Wayne is a game-time decision for Saturday’s game. Wayne has been looking on top of his game in camp so to get him playing time and to get back in his rhythm with quarterback Andrew Luck is key for the Colts.
While it is preseason and not many fans out there care about watching, the third game is always the one where you tune in to see how your team looks.
Look for the Colts to turn it up a notch as they get ready for their week one opener against the Denver Broncos and the former Indianapolis Colts quarterback, Peyton Manning.
