Last year, the Denver Broncos suffered one of the most embarrassing Super Bowl losses in the history of the NFL. The highest scoring regular season team in the history of the league only managed eight points and their opponent, the Seahawks, exploded for 43. However, despite this huge loss, this year will be different because of the Broncos new acquisitions, players returning from injury and the fact that the Seahawks lost several key players from last year.
This offeason the Broncos added receiver Emmanuel Sanders, defensive end Demarcus Ware, corner Aqib Talib and safety TJ Ward in free agency. In contrast, they lost receiver Eric Decker and corner Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. These acquisitions make them a more balanced team. Sanders manages to replace Eric Decker’s talent but gives the team more versatility and speed. Demarcus Ware adds leadership as well as over 100 career sacks to the defensive line. Aqib Talib provides a very physical style at cornerback, and marks an improvement over Rodgers-Cromartie. Talib was also assigned to Jimmy Graham last year when the superstar Tight End recorded zero catches. Finally, TJ Ward adds a hard-hitting presence to the secondary, similar to the Seahawks Kam Chancellor.
Just as important as their free agent acquisitions, the Broncos return numerous key players that missed the Super Bowl due to injury. The most important of these are corner Chris Harris, Tackle Ryan Clady and Linebacker Von Miller. Chris Harris suffered a knee injury in the playoffs but is now cleared for the season opener. He is one of the best slot corners in the league and will be a vital piece of the defense. Von Miller also suffered a knee injury at the end of last season. He is one of the best young pass rushers in the league and makes the whole defense better by giving opposing quarterbacks less time. Finally, Ryan Clady was hurt early in the season and missed almost all of the Broncos record breaking year. All three players have Pro Bowl potential and will help the team greatly this year.
Another reason the Broncos will win the Super Bowl this year is that their primary competition, the Seahawks, got worse this offseason. As with most Super Bowl winners, many contributing players got better deals to play for other teams. The two biggest losses were corner Walter Thurmond and receiver Golden Tate. Thurmond stepped up after Brandon Browner’s suspension and played a huge role for the team. He was one of the better slot corners in the league and even proclaimed himself as the best. Golden Tate served as the number one receiver for the team last year when Percy Harvin missed almost the entire year. His numbers may not jump off the page, but he was an important part of an offense that had a lot of ugly games. These two losses, as well as other minor ones, make the Seahawks weaker than last years Super Bowl winning team.
This is why the Broncos will win the 2015 Super Bowl. Their new acquisitions and players returning from injury make them a much more balanced team. Their defense, the weakness from last years squad, will be much better. Also, their primary competition got weaker this offseason, which makes the Broncos favorites despite last year’s horrible loss.
