Ben Roethlisberger has been an absolute star for his entire career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has consistently played at a high level and the franchise has been extremely successful because of it. With Big Ben at quarterback the Steelers have won two Super Bowls and have been to three. He will most likely be in the Hall of Fame when his career is done, but I think the end may be coming sooner rather than later. I believe it is time to start grooming the next great Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback.
Ben is now 34 years old. If you look at his play in recent years there is absolutely no sign of him slowing down. However, the reason I believe it’s time to bring in a young quarterback to learn from Ben is because of what the Green Bay Packers did. The transition that organization made from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers was absolutely perfect. The Pittsburgh Steelers can do that same thing.
Currently, the Steelers have a young quarterback, Landry Jones, but even though I do believe he’s a solid back up, I do not think he is a guy that can bring this team championships. So, in this draft there are a few quarterbacks that aren’t going to be high picks that the Steelers could potentially get.
The first guy that I look at is Connor Cook. I don’t know if it’s just me, but he seems to look the part of an NFL quarterback and has a lot of similarities with Ben Roethlisberger. He has great size and knows how to win. He also has a great arm and mind for the position.
The next player that catches my eye is Kevin Hogan. He’s a much lower graded player, but throughout his time at Stanford he did one thing, he won. Yes he has some flaws in his game, but he won’t be asked to step in immediately and is most likely a player that will learn a lot from Ben.
If the Steelers wanted to make a higher selection, Paxton Lynch is a great looking prospect. As of right now, he is slated to go 28th in the NFL.com mock draft. That means the Steelers would have a decent shot of him falling to them at their position, which is 25th.
Whatever the Pittsburgh Steelers do, they’re still in great hands with Ben Roethlisberger. His last two years have been fantastic and I don’t see his production dropping too much in the next couple years. Eventually, the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to replace Ben and I hope when they do, they have a young, groomed, prepared quarterback ready to go so this great franchise can continue its winning ways.
