WWE’s biggest party of the summer is this Sunday in Summerslam, the company’s second biggest pay-per-view, sitting behind WrestleMania. The card for Summerslam is loaded with excellent matches and intriguing storylines, with most of them having significant implications towards how Monday Night Raw and Smackdown Live will look moving forward. Arguably, the most interesting match at Summerslam will be between Raw’s number one draft pick, Seth Rollins, versus one of the best NXT alumnus to date in Finn Bálor. These men will be competing to see who will be the first superstar to hold the WWE Universal Championship. The announcement of the creation of the Universal Title was on Raw a few weeks ago, after Raw management Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley decided to create their own title to counter Smackdown Live’s WWE Championship.
Finn Bálor is one of the most technically sound wrestlers on the roster, and is definitely deserving of a shot at the new title. He will almost certainly experience a great deal of success in his career on the main roster, and has the potential to be one of the top guys in the company. However, his rise to the top will have to wait, as Seth Rollins should win the Universal Title at Summerslam, and will remain Raw’s main attraction for the foreseeable future.
As mentioned before, Rollins was the first pick out of the entire WWE Draft. Being the first overall pick means not only that he is incredibly talented in the ring, but he also is seen as the best wrestler in the business. That is a lot of confidence being put in Rollins, and he is deserving of it all. His run with the WWE Championship after he cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase at WrestleMania 31 showcased his very impressive ability to get a strong reaction from the crowd, as well as properly present the significance of the title.
The Universal Title will be Raw’s main belt, yet it currently does not have much legitimacy, as the situation is with any new championship belt. Seth Rollins is the man they need to have hold the title if they want their belt to at least compare to Smackdown’s WWE Championship. His skills on the mic and in the ring should help make the fans really get behind the title. Also, in the ongoing competition between Smackdown and Raw, having the company’s best heel on Raw would match up well against one of the best baby faces in the company in dean Ambrose, who represents Smackdown.
Having both a heel and face superstar representing each brand adds a feeling of uniqueness for each show, as it would get stale to watch, for example, a heel character constantly be on both shows. With Rollins as champion and the definitive face of Raw, fans of the WWE will be able to watch him work as a heel on Raw, as well as root for Dean Ambrose on Smackdown.
Finally, no one deserves to be the first Universal Champion more than Seth Rollins. He has consistently proven himself to be the best in the business, and is beginning to become more well known in pop culture. He is not yet at the popularity level of John Cena, but he absolutely has the potential to be. People want to watch him more than most other superstars in the locker room, and if Raw wants to win the competition with Smackdown, they need someone that they know people will want to watch. Rollins is that guy who can and will put people in the seats, and will do so even more successfully as champion.
As stated earlier, Bálor can definitely win a major title sometime down the road, but first Seth Rollins needs to cement himself as the definitive top guy. Seth Rollins can help put Raw well above Smackdown in both ratings and show quality. Having him as champion doesn’t mean that this would definitely happen, but it gives the show their best chance at beating out Smackdown. To quote The Authority on this one, having Seth Rollins walk out of Summerslam as the Universal Champion is “best for business.”
