With the 2016 Formula 1 season down to its final 6 races, the rivalry between Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg has grown extremely tense. This time last year, Hamilton nearly had the 2016 Driver Championship wrapped up, however it is Rosberg who holds the lead as of now.
With over 200 points on the second place Red Bull Racing team, Mercedes has the Constructor Championship all but locked up. Hamilton and Rosberg also hold nearly 100 points each over the third place Daniel Ricciardo in the driver standings, almost insuring that the 2016 Driver Champion will be from Mercedes.
However, the battle between the two wages on as Rosberg holds only an 8 point lead over Hamilton. Between the two, they have won 14 out of the 15 races this season— Rosberg leads with 8 wins to Hamilton’s 6. They are clearly the best in the sport, but as the season winds down, it is impossible to determine who will have the edge over the other.
Rosberg, on one hand, is having the one of the best seasons of his career. On top of his 8 Grand Prix victories, he has 2 additional podium finishes, and has started 7 of the races this year in pole position.
Hamilton, however, is the reigning Driver Champion for the past two years. He has experience that Rosberg does not have, which could push him ahead of his teammate in these last few races.
The Mercedes drivers, and fans alike, will be able to gain more insight this upcoming weekend as Formula 1 heads to Malaysia October 2nd.
