Next Sunday, October 9, WWE and Smackdown Live will host Smackdown’s second exclusive pay-per-view, bringing back the No Mercy PPV title. This will be the first time No Mercy has been used as a PPV title since October of 2008, where Chris Jericho retained his World Heavyweight Championship belt in a ladder match against Shawn Michaels. While not the main event, the Intercontinental title match between The Miz and Dolph Ziggler is sure to be a high point of the event, and has the potential to steal the show. Here is a review of how their feud has been up to this point, and how it should culminate at No Mercy.
This feud actually came up from The Miz’s shocking verbal attack aimed at Smackdown General Manager Daniel Bryan on an episode of Talking Smack. This was back on August 23, after Bryan called Miz’s wrestling style “cowardly.” Here is a reminder of just how intense this rant was:
Since Bryan can not physically go up against The Miz in the ring, as too many injuries had forced him to retire earlier this year, Dolph Ziggler instead was the man chosen to confront the Miz in the ring, leading to an excellent promo from Ziggler, as well as setting up an Intercontinental Title match as Backlash. That proved to be a great match, as it brought out the best in both wrestlers, with Miz proving his worth as one of the best heels in the company, as Ziggler showed that he is one of the most skilled wrestlers around. The Miz retained his title, but the fans were certainly left feeling satisfied.
With growing tension between Bryan and The Miz, including the breaking-down of contract discussions between the two, the feud was able to stay fresh and interesting, as the WWE Universe was constantly wondering about what this conflict could lead to, including a possible brand switch for The Miz:

However, The Miz has remained on Smackdown Live, and continued to feud with Ziggler. They then had a second match on the September 20 edition of Smackdown Live, where The Miz was able to once again retain his title with the help of his wife Maryse, who has been a great distraction for both Ziggler and the referees throughout the feud. This match was excellent, once again showcasing the best from each wrestler. It had great back-and-forth moments, excellent tempo, and had multiple exciting points throughout the match that received a great reaction from the crowd in attendance. Here are the highlights from that bout:
With the desire to have one more shot at the title, Ziggler came out on Smackdown last week, and gave one of the best promos of his career. Not only did Ziggler beg for one more shot at the title, but he stated that he would bet his entire career on that match. It was loaded with true emotion, with a high point being where he admitted that his career has not been exactly what he imagined. For the full promo, see the video below. For anyone who has yet to watch it, it really is a great segment, as Ziggler pours his heart out to everyone watching.
This stipulation now adds a lot more intrigue to the match, as now it could possibly be the last one of Dolph’s career if he loses. Many think that this makes the outcome easy to predict, as it now seems inevitable that Ziggler will win, but don’t be too quick to jump to that assumption. Wresltingnews.com’s Corey Jacobs recently published an article saying that it could be possible that Ziggler could be leaving WWE, as there are rumors going around that his contract will be up after the No Mercy PPV. While nothing has been confirmed, this adds another layer of excitement for the match, as it now seems that it could go both ways.
Regardless of the outcome, expect this to be one of the best matches of the night. These men have shown exceptional chemistry in the ring, and have yet to disappoint. Fans love both of these superstars, and the WWE owes it to both of these men for perfectly building up this feud, as well as adding much more interest to the often overlooked Intercontinental Championship.
While I would still pencil in Ziggler as the favorite to win, there is a good chance that everyone watching on October 8 will be more than satisfied by the end of the match.
