UFC 207 is just around the corner which means the main event fighters should be speaking to the media in the coming days to promote the fight. So far all the fighters have spoken to the media except for the main attraction, Ronda Rousey. If she didn’t show up to do the small media rounds she will at least show up for the pre-fight press conference right? Well rumors are circulating that Rousey will not be doing any media leading up to her bout with current women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. This comes as a huge surprise to me considering a few months ago the UFC’s biggest star, Conor McGregor, was pulled from UFC 200 for not showing up to his press conference. I am all for Rousey doing less media but for her to go off the grid completely isn’t fair to the rest of the fighters.
Rousey vs. McGregor
I agree with the UFC that the fighters who bring in the most revenue should be given the most leeway when it comes to the media. However, it is blatantly obvious that the UFC is giving more special treatment to Rousey than it has to McGregor. I think this is because the UFC knows that McGregor is much stronger mentally than Rousey. After losing to Nate Diaz in what was a huge upset at UFC 196 McGregor conducted himself as a true professional. He didn’t make any excuses, gave all the credit to Nate, and showed up for the post-fight press conference. Despite Dana White’s urging to defend his featherweight title McGregor told him Diaz was the only man he wanted to face. Like a true champion McGregor overcame his adversity and went on to defeat Diaz at UFC 202. On the other hand, Rousey did not show up for her post-fight press conference after her upset defeat to Holly Holm and has not discussed the fight since. Rather than avenge her loss to Holm, Rousey was given an instant shot at the title despite coming off of a loss and having been inactive for over a year. There is truly a difference in class and competitiveness with how Rousey and McGregor handled their respective defeats.
UFC is scared
The UFC is clearly coddling Rousey in a way they never had to with McGregor. All the signs point to the UFC giving Ronda every advantage to win here upcoming fight. Dana White is constantly pumping her up by saying she is by far the biggest star in the sport which is factually incorrect. The promos are over the top with how unstoppable Rousey is and barely even show Nunes at all. The cherry on top of the sundae is the UFC’s support of Rousey’s media blackout. I think the UFC is genuinely worried about what will happen to the women’s division if Ronda loses. She is without a doubt the only reason that many viewers would even tune in to watch women’s MMA in the first place. Many casual fans think Ronda will win because they don’t have a clue about who Amanda Nunes is! Real followers of the sport know that Nunes is an extremely dangerous fighter. The UFC brass better prepare accordingly because there is a real possibility that Ronda could lose again on December 30th.
