The Super Bowl is finished and it is that time of year again. The offseason is not just a time for the team to kick back, but also time for the free agent frenzy to begin.
This time a few years ago the Oakland Raiders were not a very hot team to bring in interest from top free agent targets. Although after what they have shown this last year and players like Bruce Irvin and Reggie Nelson took a chance on this team, free agents are surely going to see this team differently. Now the Oakland Raiders are a hot landing spot for some free agents and they are the team to keep an eye on this offseason.
The names that headline the 2017 Oakland Raiders’ free agency are Latavius Murray, D.J. Haden, Malcolm Smith, and Nate Allen. From those players, Latavius Murray is a player that the Oakland Raiders are expected to try and re-sign this offseason, but the Raiders may let the other players walk. Murray is a very hard player to replace in that Raider offense because he brings that agile shifty aspect with a little bit of downhill ability to that Raiders backfield. Pairing him with the two young running backs Jalen Richard and DeAndre Washington makes that backfield a very dangerous three-headed monster.
The two players D.J. Haden and Nate Allen in the Oakland raiders secondary are a little more expendable and with the addition of Karl Joseph, Reggie Nelson, and Sean Smith. This is where the free agency also comes in. The Oakland Raiders will need to make those positions a priority this off-season. Starting with the cornerback position not just letting Haden go is creating a hole, but the Oakland Raiders’ secondary is still a huge question mark. A few names that jump off the board are 27-year-olds Trumaine Johnson and Prince Amukamara. Trumaine Johnson may be a little tougher to bring in, but with that very questionable team in Los Angeles, Reggie McKenzie may just be able to put the silver and black on his back. Prince Amukamara, a former first-round pick, is a little bit more of a reasonable option with his thinner ties to Jacksonville.
The Oakland Raiders are also in need of a Linebacker this off-season possibly letting Malcolm Smith walk. Dont’a Hightower is a top target on everybody’s list if the Patriots are willing to part ways, but that is very unlikely. In a little more reasonable look at the free agents, Nick Perry would be a very high candidate because he will fit very well in that pass rush defense and help out Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin.
This off-season will be nothing like past few for the Oakland Raiders and I foresee the Raiders being a very favorable landing spot for some free agents, willing to be a part of this very young and upcoming team.
