Real Madrid has won two games and drawn once in their last three games but apparent success is deceiving. Real Madrid has actually struggled greatly in these last three games. In the first game, Real Madrid played Villareal and they struggled most of the game until they came back from a 2-0 deficit and scored three goals. Their second game was against Las Palmas; they also struggled and were down 3-1 with one man down because Gareth Bale got a red card. But once again, Real Madrid demonstrated they are the most clutch team in European football, by tying up the game in the last 10 minutes of play. Cristiano Ronaldo scored both of the goals to tie up the game. They still paid the price and got only the one point, not the outcome they needed at home against a mediocre Las Palmas team in a tight race for the La Liga title. Giving up two points in the table allowed Barcelona to take the lead by one point, albeit with one more game than Real Madrid.
Clutch is a great attribute for any team but a team cannot solely rely on that. Madrid cannot count on heroics from one player in each game to catch up or take the lead in the second half. It is important to have good starts to every game because you can be more relaxed during the game. Real Madrid did not play well in both of those games until the end. They cannot rely on being good only in the last 10 minutes of games because it will be harder for them to catch up or take the lead against very good teams.
Against teams like FC Barcelona and all of the teams in the Champions League, it will be very hard for Real Madrid to rely on being clutch. They need to play well in all the 90 minutes to demonstrate their dominance and control of the game. Luckily, Real Madrid was able to get out of their funk at the start of the games and demonstrated complete dominance in their most recent game against Eibar. Eibar was in eighth place in the La Liga table and Real Madrid had to play away against them.
Real Madrid dominated the game from start to finish and won 4-1 with two goals from Karim Benzema, one goal from James Rodriguez and another one from Marcos Asensio. They were beating Eibar 4-0 until the 72nd minute of the game when in which Ruben Yanez scored. Even though they permitted the goal, it was an impressive win. The most impressive thing about this win is that they won by a large margin without Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo, who are the two best players on the team.
This win not only demonstrated that they could dominate a whole game but it showcased the depth Real Madrid has in their squad. Real Madrid did not have available to play Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, Varane, Gareth Bale and Alvaro Morata. Yet, the team played a great game with James Rodriguez, Marcos Asensio, and Nacho Fernandez, who are unusual starters. Real Madrid’s next game is in the Champions League against SSC Napoli and they will be playing away from home. This is a tough matchup but Real Madrid is leading on aggregate 3-1. If they are able to emulate the way they played against Eibar, strong play from start to finish, then they should have no major worry about against SSC Napoli. With a win against SSC Napoli Real Madrid will be able to advance to quarter-finals of the Champions League.
