The WWE championship match at Wrestlemania is one of the highest profile matches of the year. The events that have led to this year’s WWE championship match at Wrestlemania have been some of the most unpredictable and unusual series of events in a long time.
The winner of the Royal Rumble earns the opportunity to face the WWE Champion at Wrestlemania and this year the winner of the match was Randy Orton. Coming out of the Royal Rumble it seemed as if Orton and then WWE Champion John Cena would face each other at Mania. However, for that to happen Cena would have to outlast five other men in steel structure known as the Elimination Chamber. The final three in the match were champion Cena, former champion AJ Styles, and Bray Wyatt who had been aligned with Orton since the fall. After some close back and forth action Wyatt hit Cena his finisher Sister Abigail and pinned the WWE champion. With Cena eliminated either Wyatt or Styles were going to walk out of the Chamber as champion. Both gave each other every thing they had but ultimately Styles as was hit with Sister Abigail leading to Bray Wyatt winning his first WWE Championship.
The next Tuesday on Smackdown Wyatt pinned Cena again his finisher in a WWE Championship match that also included AJ Styles. As Bray celebrated his successful defense Randy Orton came out and came face to face with the WWE Champion. Everybody expected Orton to makes his intentions known for Wyatt’s championship. However, Orton instead claimed allegiance to his fellow Wyatt Family member and gave up his championship chance. Wyatt and Orton seemed to be on the same page.
To figure out who was going to challenge the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania a 1o man over the top rope battle royal was held the next and the last two men were AJ Styles and recently exiled member of the Wyatt Family, Luke Harper. They both were narrowly escaping elimination on the apron until Harper picked Styles and they both fell onto the floor at the same time. Now the WWE championship match was even more in doubt than before. It was decided that Harper and Styles would face each other the next week in one on one match to finally figure out who would be challenging Bray Wyatt. After some controversy Styles came away with the victory and was headed towards Wrestlemania, so he thought.
Later that night as Bray Wyatt was in the ring Randy Orton appeared and one of the most unexpected events in years unfolded. Orton discussed how he had been he had been fooling Wyatt all along and was going back on his word challenging Wyatt for his title at Mania. He then processed to pour gasoline all over a shack of Wyatt’s and set it on fire.
AJ Styles and everybody else were even more confused about what was going on with the WWE Championship match at Wrestlemania. Styles would go on to face Orton the next week and have their first ever match. While there were times it seemed Styles would win Orton hit him with a RKO out of nowhere to once and for all become the challenger for Bray Wyatt’s title at Wrestlemania.
As the WWE continues towards Wrestlemania on April 2nd there are still some questions. After Orton set Wyatt’s property ablaze how further will these to go? Where does this leave AJ Styles at Wrestlemania? This Tuesday on Smackdown Live we are sure to figure out the fate of these three men and more.
