The Philadelphia 76ers’ season is nearly over, but the team still has time to experiment with their roster in their last few games of the season. The Sixers have some young guys who didn’t really get a chance to play throughout the season, but head coach Brett Brown can now call upon these players to see what their skill-set consists of.
Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot is just one example of a player who has had more time to play in recent games. Luwawu-Cabarrot spent most of the season playing minimal minutes, but now he’s shown that he has potential to be a role player for this team in the future. He could be a great three-point shooter and he’s good at defense. Giving Luwawu-Cabarrot more than 30 minutes per game will allow him to get good experience and it will allow him to be an impact player for this team.
Justin Anderson is another player who should be getting more minutes. Anderson has shown that he could be an explosive scorer if given the chance. He’s scored 19 points multiple times with the Sixers when playing limited minutes. Anderson deserves more minutes to show how much of an impact player he can be for this team in the long-run.
Shawn Long is the third player who deserves more minutes. The Sixers recently signed him, yet they’ve barely played him. Long can’t really do anything from the bench, so his talent is going to waste when he’s not actually playing in games. The Sixers can give these three players more minutes while sitting players who are more established, like Gerald Henderson, Robert Covington, and Jahlil Okafor. The Sixers have nothing to lose by doing this.
There should also be some experimentation with the lineups in the last few weeks of the season. Experimenting with smaller lineups or even putting someone like Dario Saric at point guard will allow the Sixers coaching staff to see what could work for the team in the future. Again, the Sixers have nothing to lose by doing this and they actually would be gaining some valuable information from experimenting with different lineups.
The Sixers are coming to the end of another losing season, but the season isn’t totally lost because of the valuable experience gained by some of the young players on the roster. Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons may be injured, but we’ve seen the rise of Dario Saric because he’s had more time to play. Giving other guys more time to play may give us a glimpse of how good this team could be in the future with a good supporting cast surrounding Embiid, Simmons, and Saric.
