The Masters hangover is real. It is always hard for tournaments to draw a strong field following the big tournaments on the tour. However, what better place to lure players in than the Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, home of the RBC Heritage.
Tartan: Consider this word association game: Red. Sunday. Jacket. Come from behind…. No sadly Tiger Woods did not come from behind on Sunday to win the Green Jacket. So for those who missed out on the chance to win the most coveted jacket in golf the week prior, The RBC Heritage offers a chance to slip into one the very next week. In the 2017 edition, Wesley Bryan was able to conquer a decent leaderboard and clinch his first PGA Tour win in his very own home state. This means he has officially punched his ticket to the 2018 Masters. One can assume he is looking to upgrade from funky Tartan Jacket to the timeless Green Jacket as soon as possible.
The Duf: After a relatively strong finish at The Masters, the fan favorite Jason Dufner waggled his way right down the leaderboard on Sunday. Finishing out a golf tournament is hard. Winning a golf tournament after sleeping on the 54-hole lead is hard. Handing your putter to your caddie isn’t. Perhaps one of the more interesting storylines from the weekend at Harbour Town, Dufner had a mini blow up on the par-5 fifth during the final round. After tapping in for bogey, Dufner dropped his putter by the cup, leaving it for his caddie to pick up. https://twitter.com/Skratch/status/853729443340206080 The audacity to pull such an act would have many looper’s giving their players the wrong number to the pin on the next hole. Not cool Duf. Coincidence he ‘dropped’ to 11th after holding the lead going into the final round?
Taco Bell: What better place to wear a new “spiffy” tartan blazer than to Taco Bell? What better place to celebrate winning a quick 1.1 million dollars than Taco Bell? For Wesley Bryan there is no better place. After making a tradition of going to Taco Bell after winning several mini-tour events, Bryan continued his routine after his victory at the RBC. Donning the famous red tartan, Bryan along with close friends celebrated in glamorous Taco Bell fashion. https://twitter.com/wesleybryangolf/status/853830450791493632 Lets hope he picked up the bill.
Trick Shots: Another major takeaway from this weekend is the origin of Wesley Bryan himself. Once famous for being part of the Bryan Brothers, Wesley has quite the knack for golf trick shots. Along with his brother George, the two started a YouTube channel. In fact, several of their videos have accumulated views in the range of 250,000 and they have been lucky enough to film with the likes of Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen and Rory McIlroy. So if Wesley Bryan is really good at trick shots but can also win a PGA Tour event, that must mean trick shot guys like Dude Perfect and Brodie Smith have a professional future ahead of them?
No it is not The Masters. But the RBC Heritage does do a good job following up the biggest show in golf. Even if their jacket isn’t as coveted, by winning the Tartan, you are guaranteed a shot at the Green the following year- just have to wait the longest.
