Mizzou’s Frank Haith explained the Tigers’ first-round loss to Norfolk State saying they had not looked at film. Coach K of Duke said they lost because they didn’t know what a Mountain Hawk was. The 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, March Madness, begins Tuesday night in Dayton, OH, with the “First Four” games. The top seeds for the tournament are the Kentucky Wildcats, the Syracuse Orange, the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels and the Michigan State Spartans. The big question – as always – where are the upsets coming from? Which No. 5 seed will lose to a No. 12 seed…it always happens! Can Mizzou, after 25 appearances in the tournament, finally get to the Final Four? These questions…and more…will be decided over the next three weeks, ending with the Final Four teams in New Orleans.

UNC Asheville Basketball: Bulldogs Win Big South Title – Gain Automatic NCAA Bid

The UNC Asheville Bulldogs basketball team won the Big South Conference Tournament Satuday afternoon, defeating VMI 80-64, at Kimmel Arena. The top-seeded Bulldogs received the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and they will learn their seeding on Selection Sunday. Asheville dominated the tournament, winning three games and out-scoring their opponents by 68 points. They also won the regular season title by winning a record 16 games while losing just 2 in the conference.

Big South Conference Adds Longwood; Goes to Divisional Play for 2012-13 Season

The Big South Conference is adding Longwood University as its 12th member institution on July 1, 2012. For basketball, the league will split into two divisions – the North, consisting of the four Virginia-based schools (Longwood, Liberty, Radford and VMI) plus High Point and Campbell, and the South (Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville and Winthrop) – beginning next season. The league’s post-season tournament will also be played at a single site for the first time ever beginning next year.

Top-seeded UNC Asheville advanced to the Big South Conference Semifinals with a convincing 86-61 win over No. 8-seeded High Point Wednesday night at Kimmel Arena. Five Bulldogs scored in double figures, and a 25-5 run midway through the second half gave the Bulldogs plenty of breathing room, after leading by 9 at the half.
