The USC Trojans got good news the last two weeks, landing 4-star cornerback Chris Hawkins and top-ranked 2013 quarterback Max Browne, but the optimism was tempered by Tre Madden’s season-ending knee injury.

Saturday’s scrimmage gives fans a chance to see new players in new positions, but injuries have taken some of the top returners, as well as key newcomers, out of the game.

The USC Trojans took the first step towards wrapping up some “unfinished business” when they took the field for the first practice of the 2012 spring season. Confidence was the theme of the day, and George Farmer, MVP of day one, had plenty to spare.

In the face of NCAA sanctions that limit the number of signees to 15, USC’s Lane Kiffin turned in another top-notch recruiting class. The signees fill holes on the O-line, but this year’s class leaves Tailback U a little thin at a marquee position.

The day after blue-chip recruit Arik Armstead announced his intention to sign with Oregon, the USC Trojans scored a lineman of their own in five-star offensive tackle Zach Banner.

Many top recruits are on the fence – or at least playing coy – about their future school in the last few days before National Signing Day, but with just three days to go, the USC football program already has several future players locked in.

Matt Barkley and T.J. McDonald made Trojans’ fans very happy when they announced they’d return for another season of USC football, but a few of the players from the 2011 roster won’t be coming back this year. Juniors Matt Kalil and Nick Perry announced in December that they would enter the NFL draft in April, and while it was no surprise that either of them planned to leave for the pros, some other offseason departures were a little more unexpected.

In a festive setting at Heritage Hall, quarterback Matt Barkley announced his decision to remain at USC for his senior season.

Southern Cal’s favorite son, junior quarterback Matt Barkley, will announce his intentions – to enter the NFL draft or return for another season at USC – this afternoon (12/22) at 4 p.m. ET.

The USC Trojans ended their season Saturday night with a record-breaking 50-0 win over their crosstown rivals from UCLA.
