Lucas Named First Team all Big Ten; Other Spartans Honored

By Mitch Braun • on March 9, 2010

I always take some pride in Spartans being named to the All Big Ten squads and am especially glad when players like Goran Suton and Travis Walton left MSU last year after finally being honored. At the same time, I find the awards can be somewhat political and thus in a year when I saw a two man Coach of the Year race between Thad Matta and Bo Ryan,

Tom Izzo became the sixth coach in Big Ten history to win least six conference championships. He joins the Bob Knight who won 11 at IU, Piggy Lambert and Gene Keady 11 and 6 at Purdue, Walter Mean 9 at Wisconsin and Fred Taylor 7 at OSU. Izzo was unaware of the accomplishment and stated, “Really?

Morgan Scores 1500th as Spartans Just Get by PSU 67 – 65

Raymar Morgan hit four free throws in the final 1:24 and the Spartans needed at least three of them to beat Penn State. It was embarrassing after the Spartans lost to the Lions at the Breslin Center for the first time ever last year. It almost happened again and this time it would have been much worse

The Spartans (22 – 7, 12 – 4 Big Ten) again are in solid shape for a Big Ten Title after beating Purdue (24 – 4, 12 – 4 Big Ten). Both teams are ½ game back of Ohio State. The Spartans have only home games with Penn State and Michigan remaining, Ohio State has Illinois at home and Purdue plays

Another Disappointing Loss for the Spartans, OSU Wins at Breslin 74 -67

In the annals of frustrating games through history and from this year’s frustrating season, this is one of the worst. The Spartans (21 – 7, 11 – 4 Big Ten) roared back from down 14 to take a 62 – 61 lead and then collapsed against Ohio State (21 – 7, 11 – 4 Big Ten). The Spartans were

Michigan State Beats Hoosiers 72 – 58

Michigan State went on the road again and just like last year pulled out a win in Bloomington. It is the first time since 1985 & 86 that the Spartans (20 – 6, 11 – 3 Big Ten) have won back to back games in Assembly Hall. This was a strange game for Michigan State. The Spartans were outrebounded

I am so down on Raymar Morgan and Durrell Summers I don’t even know how to express my disappointment. Both have had great games and Morgan is about to finish a statistically great career. Both have also been extremely inconsistent. Morgan has had few great performances in big games. One was in the

Spartans Struggle Without Lucas, Lose to Illini 78 – 73

The Spartans (19-5, 9-2 Big Ten) got a glimpse of what the team is like without Lucas and the answer is: not very good. I have never been a Korie Lucious fan and he was absolutely terrible, he had just three assists and six turnovers. Meanwhile, with Lucas out, Dimitri McCamey scored 22 points and

Michigan State (19 – 4, 9 – 1 Big Ten) is coming up on the toughest part of the schedule and bad luck seems to be coming. The Spartans looked terrible in Madison, a game I expected them to lose, but more important, Kalin Lucas suffered a high ankle sprain in the second half and is out indefinitely.

Behind a huge night from Durrell Summers the Spartans (19 – 3, 9 – 0 Big Ten) beat Northwestern (14 – 7, 3 – 6 Big Ten) to complete a perfect first half of the Big Ten Season. The Spartans played a pretty good game, but only led 30 – 28 at the half. The problem was MSU attempted 11 first half
